Running effective 1:1s is essential to keep your remote team motivated, engaged, and aligned. Here’s a method we use at JobRack that makes these check-ins more productive and meaningful:
1. Use a Scorecard for Consistency
At JobRack, we use a scorecard template where team members complete a monthly review tab before each 1:1.
It includes prompts for reflection and encourages team members to assess their performance and goals.
2. Encourage Reflection in Advance
To avoid “on-the-spot” pressure, ask team members to fill in the scorecard a few days before the meeting.
This gives them time to think about their achievements, areas for improvement, and upcoming priorities.
It also helps them share honest insights about what could be improved without the discomfort of having to say it in person.
3. Discuss Areas for Improvement and New Ideas
Team members can suggest what the team should start, stop, or continue doing.
This agile approach draws out valuable insights since they often see daily operations in ways that managers don’t.
4. Support and Connection
Include questions on what support they need from their manager and how the team can help them succeed in the next month.
We also promote connection through “coffee calls” by pairing team members randomly each month and encouraging them to share feedback and ideas for team-building.
5. Flexible Focus in 1:1s
Managers review the scorecard in advance, so the meeting can either touch on each point or dive into one specific thread, depending on what will make the conversation most valuable.
This flexibility ensures that 1:1s are structured but open to deeper, meaningful discussions.
Using this scorecard approach, you can transform 1:1s from routine meetings into powerful touchpoints that strengthen trust, align goals, and foster a culture of continuous growth.
