Ammo.com is a leading online ammunition retailer in the United States.

Professionally we are a small yet high-achieving remote team. Each person on the team strives to become a better version of themselves both within work and outside of it.

About the role

Ammo.com is looking for a CMO who can help take us to new heights in the SERPs 📈

Due to the nature of the business, we are unable to advertise on traditional Big Tech media outlets (Google, Facebook, etc) and thus content marketing and SEO are our primary traffic sources.

Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for overseeing various team members and all of our marketing operations, which are heavily-focused on SEO, as described below.

  • On-site: You will work with our Managing Editor to ensure content is written to rank in Google while also matching our brand guidelines. You will also provide feedback to designers so we can find that beautiful blend between what ranks vs. what looks good.
     
  • Off-site: You will work with our outreach team to make sure all of our content is properly distributed. Publishing lays the groundwork, much like planting seeds, whereas distribution waters and nurtures them, allowing growth and reach.
     
  • Digital PR: A subsegment to "off-site" mentioned above is Digital PR, which we are heavily focused on at the moment. You’ll oversee the efforts of our outreach manager and our Managing Editor to develop and implement PR campaigns to promote our data studies and publications.
     
  • Technical: While you don't need to be a developer, you do need to have a solid understanding of tech SEO in order to work with our development team in the event problems arise.
     
  • Example: Perhaps you've noticed that category pages are failing PageSpeed Insights. You don't have to know the exact process to improve the page speed, but you need to be able to work with our developers to tell them WHY we need this brought up and if there are any specific metrics that need improvement: LCP, CLS, etc.
     
  • Analytics and Reporting: While you won't be manually grabbing data yourself, you need to know how to work with other team members to make sure we're measuring and reporting on tests that we're running and then taking appropriate action based on the data that comes in.

  • Get Sh*t Done (GSD): Ammo.com is a high-trust, high-autonomy work culture. You're given a lot of independence in terms of where, when, and how to work. You're also expected to get sh*t done (GSD) and help others GSD in a timely manner.
     
  • Be conscientious: Be an enabler, not a blocker. As stated above, you are given a lot of independence in this role but that comes with responsibility. Work hard and you will be rewarded.
     
  • Team Leader: You oversee all of our marketing operations and multiple team members. We aren't looking for a "boss" but a leader. You must be comfortable with this otherwise it won't work.
     
  • Love Liberty: You need to be in alignment with Ammo.com's core ethos. This role has a lot of independence because we've found that, when values align, working together is easy and fun.

Tools we use:

We use a variety of world class tools to make sure our work is just that: World class.

Here are the tools you can expect to use on a daily or weekly basis.

  • ClickUp - for project management.
  • Slack - for quick communication and calls.
  • Magento - CMS for the website.
  • Pitchbox - for outreach and link building.

Three other tools that we use are:

  • Ahrefs
  • Google Analytics
  • Google Search Console

If you haven't heard of these three, this role isn't for you.

About you

Here is where HR teams drop a bunch of vague adjectives that don't really mean anything.

But that's not the case here.

We're serious.

If you're the ideal candidate then you have at least 3+ years working in e-commerce SEO and, more importantly, you display the below characteristics:

  • Excellent communication: We all work remote so clear, timely and clear communication is key.
  • Problem solver: This goes hand-in-hand with "getting sh*t done" - take action.
  • Detail oriented: I forgot a comma above in the job description, did you notice it?
  • Keen to work in a fast-paced environment with a lot of independence.

Our operating principle is “ask for forgiveness, not permission.” 

Being a completely remote team, you can't always wait around for an answer. We're in different timezones so going out and doing a bit of research on your own to determine the correct course of action goes a long way. We encourage every team member to not wait for an answer but rather go and seek it out.

Oh, one more thing, you’ll need to have a good working knowledge of the outdoors.

Specifically, firearms and hunting - the more you know, the better as it’ll really come in handy.
