The perfect side gig

I think this is the perfect side job for you. If you want to be left alone to do your work, not constantly be hassled with meetings, and make your own schedule, then this will be a good fit for you. The requirements are for 10 hours per week, but could be more in the future if this goes really well. I have a couple clients that I will probably work with forever (who you will be helping me with) but I could add more clients for this business, increase your pay, and have you work more hours — if thats what you want / this goes really well.

If we're both happy with the arrangement as is, I believe this will continue for a long time.

What’s in it for you?

  • $20-30 per hour (based on skills and experience)
  • 10 Hours Per Week
  • Fully flexible working hours and the opportunity to build your own work schedule
  • NO MEETINGS! I like to work asynchronously (email / chat) with minimal voice/video calls. Probably 1-2 per month, if necessary
  • Casual working environment — you will be working with me and my assistant. I will review your code, but as long as you're completing the tasks assigned to you at a high level and in a reasonable amount of time - I'm happy!
  • Easy-to-please clients — the clients I have, have been working with me for a long time. They're not overly demanding.
  • Control over the code — I will not nitpick how you do things. At the end of the day it just needs to be maintainable.
  • Freedom to build — have a cool idea for a feature on a store? Happy to pitch it to the client and have you ship it.

To excel in this role, you need to have:

  • 2-5 Years of experience in Website Development
  • General experience building, launching and maintaining stores, as well as general knowledge of the admin system
  • Demonstrable expertise with HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, with an in-depth understanding of DOM
  • Having been a part of building a Shopify theme from scratch and/or Storefront API
  • Experience with Shopify's theming system and Liquid templating
  • Experience with implementing/debugging 3rd party Shopify apps as well as creating custom solutions if necessary
  • Experience with Shopify's object/properties, AJAX API, and Meta fields
  • Thorough testing and debugging skills with browser console and external tools
  • Experience developing responsive layouts for desktop, tablet, and mobile
  • Experience working with 3rd party services and APIs, specific plugins for Shopify

Basically… you need to be able to take a figma design, or written concept, and produce a working solution. The solution needs to be performant (not like psycho level performance but good enough), the code well written (not a big mess), and the interactions with it need to be smooth.

An example would be building a slide-out cart from scratch. Can you write the layout using HTML/CSS, the cart interactions using AJAX, and the theme compatibility using liquid? Then you're good!

Why should you not take this?

If you're looking for a lifelong career then this probably isn't the role for you. I plan on working with clients in the same capacity for a long time, but it is just me and an assistant, not a large corporation.

If you're looking for team bonding, again probably not the role for you. I like to focus on the work when at work. I'd like our relationship to be friendly of course, I like to send memes like everyone else! but I won't be sitting on hour long calls with you on a regular basis or asking you lots of details about your personal life.

The Application process

Please submit an application with: why you'd like to take this opportunity, a short overview of your experiences. and examples of your work.

If I feel you are qualified I will invite you to a paid test, where I give you a design, a shopify development store login, and ask you to build a component that I think should take less than an hour or two. When its finished, I'll ask you to schedule a short 15 minute voice call so you can talk me through the code.

Looking forward to your application!
