Start with reasons why this job excites you.

Avoid the Generic Addressing

Terms like “Dear Hiring Manager” or “To Whom it May Concern” are painfully generic and often put off the reader. For example, “A lot of healthcare companies are grappling with how the changing laws will affect their ability to provide high-quality care,” if you’re applying for a job in the healthcare industry. Google the latest news, and you will find something worth adding to your cover letter.  

Start by mentioning some interesting facts about the job like changing laws, and then talk about how you’re equipped with the skills to meet those needs.

Create a PDF Instead of Word Doc

When you’re dealing with the professional world, everything, including the format of your cover letter adds up to your reputation. PDF are not only more professional, but anyone can virtually open it with or without access to Microsoft Office. To temper with a PDF file, one needs special tools, which makes a win-win situation for you on all fronts.

If your hiring manager does not support your word doc format, it is highly possible they will simply skip your cover letter and move on the next one. The chances of them trying to change the format of your cover letter are sadly bleak.

Convey Your Hardworking Spirit and Enthusiasm

Do not forget to show your enthusiasm for the position. For example, you can start the second paragraph of your letter by showcasing your enthusiasm for being a part of their project and working hard with other team members. An enthusiastic and upfront candidate has more value than you think, and moderate buttering will do the rest of the job. You can write something like “I’d love to work for your company. Who wouldn’t? You’re the industry leader, setting standards that others only follow.” Don’t go overboard with the flattering, as it might make you seem less trustworthy.

Use the same kind of language you would use as a salesperson, trying to sell a product to a new customer.



  • Make your opening statement strong, bold, and clear about what value you can add to the job and why you’re right for it.
  • Be short and precise in your cover letter, and try to add some interesting facts about the company and the industry.
  • Share your accomplishments briefly to showcase your skills and value, but be exact.


  • Add funny phrases or slangs, as it is highly unprofessional and you will most probably be misunderstood.
